This guide is not about guilt. It is about two very concrete things: what health authorities in nine countries recommend today, and what you can actually do on a Tuesday afternoon, when it is six o’clock, you have been on your feet for twelve hours and your child has spent twenty minutes asking for the phone.
You have seen it. They are watching videos, their jaw goes slack and their eyes go still, and when you take the phone away they do not protest the way they would about a toy: they protest as if you had taken away something much bigger.
The explanation is not mysterious and does not need dressing up. One short video after another is not an activity: it is a run of beginnings. Something new happens every three seconds, there is never a dull moment, and the next thing starts by itself without anyone deciding anything. Next to that, everything else in the living room looks slow. It is not that the child is «hooked» in some dramatic sense; it is that they have just come from a place moving at a pace real life does not have, and coming back is hard.
That is why the six-o’clock battle is almost never won by switching the screen off. It is won by having what comes next ready.
The striking thing here is how little the health authorities disagree with each other. They got there by different routes, in different years, and they end up in the same place: the younger the child, the less; and before two or three, none.

If you feel a long way from these numbers, you are not the exception: almost everyone is. They are written as a direction to walk in, not as an exam you pass or fail.
The most cited study of recent years comes from Japan. Takahashi and colleagues followed 7,097 mother-child pairs from the Tohoku cohort and published the result in JAMA Pediatrics in 2023. They measured how much screen time each child had at one year old and then assessed their development at two and at four.
They found a stepped relationship. At age two, compared with children watching under an hour a day: those on one to two hours had a higher risk of communication delay (OR 1.61), those on two to four hours more (OR 2.04), and those on four hours or more, far more (OR 4.78). At age four there was still a difference in communication and problem-solving, though smaller.
The second pillar is a meta-analysis by Madigan and colleagues, also in JAMA Pediatrics, pooling 42 studies on screens and child language. Three findings: more screen time is associated with weaker language; watching together and talking about it is better than watching alone; and starting later is associated with better language than starting earlier.
Now the part that is almost never told. None of this shows that screens cause the delay. These are observational studies. It is entirely possible that a child who already finds language harder is also a child who is harder to entertain any other way, and ends up with more screen time because of it. The arrow can point both ways and current research does not settle it.
What does have solid support is a duller and more useful explanation: displacement. An hour of screen is an hour not spent talking to you, handling objects, moving about or being bored. And we do know what those four things are for. Framed that way, the question at home stops being «how much harm does it do?» and becomes «what is taking the place of what?», which is a question you can actually answer on a Tuesday afternoon.
None of them are original or ours. They are the ones the documents above keep repeating and the ones that, in our experience with families, survive more than a week.
We are not saying this out of nostalgia. We say it for three fairly prosaic reasons.
The first is that a sheet has a visible ending. The child can see where the page stops. In an app you cannot see the end — that is exactly the design — so there is no natural moment to stop.
The second is that a sheet does not interrupt. No notification, no next video, no recommendation. For a child who struggles to hold attention, each interruption does not cost ten seconds: it costs starting again.
The third is that you touch it. You colour, cut, glue, press the pencil down. And here there is a study worth looking at carefully: Van der Weel and Van der Meer, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, recorded brain activity with 256 electrodes in 36 people while they wrote by hand or typed. Handwriting produced connectivity patterns across parietal and central regions that typing did not.
And now the small print, which is also part of the guide: they were 36 university adults, not children, and what was measured was brain connectivity, not how much they learned. It is an interesting lead, not proof that handwriting teaches more. Anyone selling it to you as proof is selling you something.
We are not going to tell you that an activity workbook «improves your child’s brain». No study says that about any workbook, ours included, and anyone claiming it is stretching the evidence until it snaps.
What a workbook does is far more modest and rather more useful: it fills a stretch of time with a task that has a beginning and an end, matched to what that particular child finds hard, with their name inside so they want to open it. That stretch is a stretch the screen does not take. That is all we claim, and it is enough.
Nor are we going to tell you screens are the enemy. A video call with grandma is human contact, not screen time in the worrying sense, and most of the recommendations above say so. The question is not paper versus screen: it is a task with a purpose versus entertainment with no ending.
The following Sunday, keep what survived and drop what did not. Nobody holds seven changes at once.
